Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning vortex or wheel. Chakras are the seven centers of which our consciousness or energy system is composed.
These energy centers, or chakras, function as pumps or valves which we open and close according to circumstances. The functioning of chakras reflect the decisions we make concerning our response to circumstances in our lives.
The chakras are aspects of consciousness. Auras are an aspect of consciousness. Neither are physical. The chakras are more dense than auras but not as dense as the physical body.
Aura photography can reveal the size, shape and general functioning of the chakras.
By keeping our chakras balanced and clear we are likely to feel more vitally alive, make clearer decisions, have more energy and better regulate the body’s functions.
The chakras represent particular parts of the physical body as well as particular parts of your consciousness.
RED - Located at the very base of the spine. This deep red chakra grounds and connects us to the earth. The Root Chakra is associated with Tribe, Earth and Family. When our root chakra is open and balanced, we feel a sense of being connected to the Earth, the Planet itself. When we are grounded - connected - to the Earth, we have a greater sense of well being, deserving and belonging.
This Chakra relates to our basic needs of food, shelter and water and we all must have those needs met. Often, when fear comes up about our basic needs being threatened, it is this Chakra that holds the fear energy. This fear based energy is known as "survival" energy.
We can also work with the First Chakra when we find ourselves needing centering or grounding.
ELEMENT: Earth

BODY PART(S): Adrenal Glands, associated with survival (fight or flight) instincts
ORANGE - A warm glowing orange located in our lower abdomen, right below the navel. This chakra is associated with our sexuality and its expression. This Second Chakra is also the center of our creativity - self expression, emotional expression and our sense of deserving and enjoyment of the pleasures of life.
When the sacral chakra is balanced, we feel inspired, expressive and abundant. As we live our life from a place of enjoyment, pleasure and full expression we feel robust and alive. We find ways to express ourselves and a sense of allowing for the emotional tides that come and go. Our emotional expression is a key point of our health and well being.
ELEMENT: Water
STONES: Carnelian, Tiger’s Eye, Citrine
BODY PART(S): Testicles, Ovaries
YELLOW - Located between the bottom of the ribcage and the hip bones - the navel area. This bright yellow ball of energy heats up our personal sense of power. You may have heard the expression "fire in the belly"? Our Third Chakra is also know as our Power Center and it is from here that we emanate our sense of self and autonomy.
This Third Chakra is the connecting point between the upper and lower chakras and it is here that we present ourselves. It is this power center that moves us forward with our dreams. When this chakra is open, we feel worthy of all that life has to offer us.
It is through this Third Chakra that we harness the power to create the life of our dreams and move toward those dreams. The solar plexus energy gives us the strength and fortitude to persist.
ELEMENT: Fire
STONES: Topaz, Citrine, Amber
BODY PART(S): Pancreas, controls digestion
GREEN - The Fourth Chakra is concerned with the love and compassion we can feel for ourselves - and of course, for others.
It is through the Heart Center that we flow kindness, consideration, understanding and peacefulness. When we are in the flow of this loving kindness we can easily extend these feeling to others.
Our Heart Center creates balance in our lives and from this balanced place we are able to radiate love and well being into the world.
A heart centered awareness is one where we move from the domain of the mind and logic and drop into our heart for answers.

BODY PART(S): Thymus - Immune System
BLUE - Communication and Truth are aspects of the Throat Chakra. When this chakra is balanced we are easily able to share our perspectives and truths with others. We take the time to consider our words and the effects they may have on others.
We are able to express our opinions and ideas in way that makes them easy to receive. We can ask for what we want clearly and concisely.
When our communication is open and clear, our life moves more gracefully and we find ourselves on target with our dreams and desires.
ELEMENT: Sound
STONES: Blue Agate, Aquamarine, Turquoise, Blue Topaz, Lapis Lazuli
BODY PART(S): Thyroid - metabolism
INDIGO - Between the eyebrows and slightly above - in the center of the forehead is where we find this chakra. Our insight, intuition and awareness is greatly enhanced when this chakra is open and clear.
This chakra also known as our psychic center; from where we learn to "see" with a different sight. Meditation can be a great enhancement to this chakra as well.
Inside us is all we need to know. As we clear this area, and become more familiar with our third eye or inner eye, we can more readily tap into our wisdom and knowledge.
ELEMENT: Light Body

BODY PART(S): Pituitary Gland - influences growth of hormones
VIOLET - Glowing at the top of our head is the Crown Center. This violet infused bright white light has rays that reach out into the worlds beyond us.
I imagine the crown center as having all the colors of the rainbow and being a transmitter and receiver that allows us to be aware of many planes of existence. This is how we connect with other beings in other dimensions, God, Goddess, All That Is, our guides, allies, angels - our Higher Self.
That "small voice" that guides us is a function of the Crown Chakra. Throughout history, the Queens and Kings wore jeweled crowns made of precious metals. It was believed that these crowns strengthened the signals the monarchs were receiving and would help them make better decisions.
STONES: Amethyst, Alexandrite, Flourite
It is believed by many of the indigenous elders, medicine people and modern day healers that the chakra system and the energy field, know as our luminous energy field – are a primary consideration in our health and well being.
How energy flows through this centers is primary to our vitality and well being.
